Week 5: You're in a Dogfight

Image
Week 5: You're in a Dogfight A lot of teams that had great first quarter of the season got smacked in the mouth this week. Some of them survived, some of them did not. College football will always argue that it has the best regular season because every game matters. You can't lose more than one game and win the whole thing. Sure, success looks different for everyone, but some assistant coaches will have long weeks watching the tape and sweating the season ahead. A Week (4) in Review Favorite Game: Wake Forest vs Clemson Wake has to be kicking themselves here. Last year they had the chance to beat Clemson when they were down and they missed. This year they played so much better but the Tigers didn't blink. Give DJ Uiagalelei a ton of credit. Since that magical night in South Bend he has taken a lot of heat for his play, and deservedly so. But today he came out slinging. Clemson's offense relies heavily on their receivers to create separation. When they have Sammy Watki...

Week 4: Survive and Advance and 1st Quarter Awards

Week 4: Survive and Advance and 1st Quarter Awards A lot of survive and advance for teams this weekend, at least outside of the Big 3. I'm not gonna lie, the noon hour had some doldrums whether it be blowouts or just bad football. But then with the absurd Purdue vs Syracuse ending we were off to the races. Hail Mary's, B1G vs SEC, Oregon's redemption, we had it all. Let's dive in. A Week (3) in Review Favorite Game: Wake Forest vs Liberty A lot of close games this weekend that could've taken this slot. But I'm going with the game that was entertaining from start to finish. You could be excused for not flipping over to the ACC Network for this one but Hugh Freeze's squad came to play (much to the chagrin of my picks last week). Wake could not get the running game going, only having 21 rushing yards. This led to some turnovers in the passing game as they were one dimensional. Liberty scored with just over a minute to go and decided to go for 2 and the win. Th...

Week 3: It's Always Sunny in College Football

Week 3: It's Always Sunny in College Football In week one it seemed like the season could be predicted and we could just skip ahead to New Year's Eve and start the playoffs. But then came week two and the Sun Belt descended onto College Station and South Bend. The randomness of college football is what makes it so captivating. We dive into it all and look ahead to next week below, but don't look at the schedule and determine that no good games will happen during the upcoming weekend. College football delivers. A Week (2) in Review Favorite Game: Alabama at Texas "Who are these Longhorns?" - Gus Johnson I love the story of the team with the most resources and best recruiting bed in all of college football being the darling underdogs. Sark had the Longhorns unafraid and ready to play. Alabama is incredibly physical and the Longhorns matched that. They moved the pocket around to fight off Will Anderson and company (see play breakdown below) and if Quinn Ewers did no...

Week 2: Catch Your Breath

Image
Catch Your Breath Someone bring out the oxygen mask and is there a return policy on these bad beats I paid for? What a long and fun weekend! With games on Sunday and Monday, it feels like we have such a short week until Louisville and UCF kick off on Friday. I hope you got outside and enjoyed the last bit of summer while you can, hopefully these notes give you some things to talk about at the water cooler this week. A Week (1) in Review Favorite Game: North Carolina vs Appalachian State No one can blame you for turning off the tv after the 3rd quarter when UNC was up 41-21. But App State battled back, scoring with 31 seconds left and missing the 2pt conversion to be down 1. Then all hell broke loose. UNC returned the onside kick attempt for a touchdown. Appalachian State has a big kickoff return of their own and two great passes to score with 9 seconds left to go down 2, missing the 2pt conversion AGAIN. This is why we love football. These two teams scored more than when their tw...
